Past uses of the Searing
This is my theory on how the Searing spell was used in the past. Parts of it have almost undoubtably been discussed by others, however, I failed to find a previous thread on the topic in this forum.
Basically, I think the spell used to make the Searing was the primary weapon used during Abbadon's assault on Arah. Several pieces of evidence point to this being the case. The first is the battlefield on which this assault took place, the Crystal Desert. In game sources state that the desert was created from a vast shallow sea during Abbadon's assault. Given the proven ability of the Searing spell to cause major damage across vast swathes of land, it seems the most likley canidate to have created the Crystal Desert. Additionally, every piece of sand in the Crystal Desert is actually a minute crystal, hence the name of the area. In the Searing of Ascalon, crystals of varying proportions dropped from the sky. It is entirely possible that as these large crystals in Ascalon erode, they will turn into the kind crystal sand found in the Crystal Desert, lending further credence to this theory
Futhermore, evidence of a Searing spell having been cast can be seen in the Crystal Overlook. Here, in a place that once would have been near the shore of the Crystal Sea, one can see the ruins of an altar that bears an uncanny similarity to the one used by the Charr for the Searing (for those interested in looking, its in the center of the main patch of sulfur, where one finds Zhetuka's Great Horn.) The only real differece between the two is a colonade around the Desolation one. However, the actual altar flame holder is identical.
Therefore, it is possible to speculate that when the Titans taught the Charr the Searing spell, it was nothing new. Indeed, the spell seems to have been an old trick of Abbadon, used once more on a world that had long since forgotten its first use.

It's quite possible. Good find, especially considering that all grains of sand are crystal - as further proven in The Dragon's Lair, a realm inside one grain of sand, a realm in which everything seems crystalline.
It has been discussed before that the Titans taught the Charr the spell, or at least gave them the power, so to chase the Chosen from Ascalon and set about the events of the Flameseeker Prophecies and free them (heck, I think I made a post summing up this theory once).
Considering the Crystal Desert once being a shallow sea, the immense heat created by the Searing could have evaporated it all. Though it is not really seen firsthand, supposedly the Searing bears extreme blazing tempratures, since it totally ruined all plantlife in Ascalon and turned the land infertile. That or, over time, the crystals simply eroded and formed an extremely thick layer of sand over it.

I was under the impression that the crystal sea was already a desert when the Charr attack arah>
But otherwise it's a nice idea. Seeing as the titans are pretty fiery anyway it doesn seem like The Searing is a spell they could have written.

Yups the Crystal Sea was a desert Long before the Searing, that occured just before the Exodus in the battle between Abaddon, his Margonites, The old Gods and their forgotton.

Indeed it was to the best of my knowledge. I'm not claiming that THE Searing that wrecked Ascalon created the Crystal Desert, I'm saying that A Searing might have done it. Such a Searing would have been from the time of Abbadon's first assault on Arah and the weak point in the Rift, in 1BE. This accords with the scriptures of Abbadon, which state;
"An unsettling silence swept across the waves. The twilight sky shattered and stars streaked down upon the Forgotten armada." -Scriptures of Abbadon 1BE
To me, this sounds like a Searing event. Taken together with the other evidence (crystals, quick climate change, Searing altars in Elona,) the theory seems to be worth at least considering.

The Main event of the Searing was a huge cascade of crystal meteors which main goal was bringing sections of the wall down and destroying towns etc, the name came from the Fire bearers of the Charr (since the Charr swept through the lands of Ascalon like a Fire propelled by the wind and burned everything they found and made their fire alters in the shape of the burning Titans).
The Desert on the other day was created when the Sea was Boiled off/removed (in some way, which resulted in the death of all creatures living in that area and leaving just the sandy seabed there was no meteor shower there.

But the Scripture specifically say that "stars streaked from the sky" this sounds like a meteor shower to me. And, as Eldin has speculated and the landscape of modern Ascalon seems to indicate, the Searing meteor shower may have been accompanied by a heat wave which "seared" the ground of Ascalon and boiled the waters of the Crystal Sea away.

On the 51st day of his exodus, a frightful sight manifested before Jadoth's eyes: the unmistakable shape of Forgotten warships upon the horizon's shimmering edge.
And prayed Jadoth, "Abaddon! Lord of the Everlasting Depths, Keeper of Secrets, open mine eyes and bestow upon me the knowledge of the Abyss that I might smite mine enemies and send them to the watery depths!
An unsettling silence swept across the waves. The twilight sky shattered and stars streaked down upon the Forgotten armada. The seas boiled and ruptured, and gave birth to a maelstrom from which not even light could escape, and transforming the sky above into a midnight void.
And thus was magic gifted to Jadoth, chosen of Abaddon, the first of the Margonites.

What you describe as sounding like a searing sounds very much like Abaddon granting magic to the Margonites. The Crystal Desert in legends was formed by the gods. It was also created in Year 0 - the same year the gods left and Abaddon was sent into Torment.

Humans dont know about the Magonites or Abaddons War with the other Gods and as such the true actions were covered up by the other gods as to why the desert was formed.
The Forming of the Dessert came about from the Battle of the Gods, Margonites and presumably forgotton. Abaddon's Powers over Water i imagine made him remove all Water from the area to kill all foes of his margonites (althoug it possibly killed some/all of them too). Was that his final act in the battle, he destroyed Everything in the Dessert, which is the reason the other gods finally decided he was too dangerious to leave loose, until then they werent too bothered by his rebellion (Balthazar probally enjoyed the battles)
As for this scripture about stars steaking, wheres that from i dont recall having ever seen it? But if ur talking about what Erol says in Surmia about the Rain of fire, he was refering to the Crystals falling from the sky which were surrounded by fire (one orange but later changed to blue) like all metoers that fall.
The Charred ground of Ascalon was due to the Charr (hang on a sec was that a play on words by Anet ) ther flame Bearers were the ones who burned everything as they swarmed through Ascalon.

Thats quite abit of guesswork. As we know the final battle took place where the Mouth of Torment is. I dont think the Crystal Sea was ever mentioned to be part of the battles aside from the Margonites killing sprees. But the Temple of the 6 Gods was somewere on the shores of the Crystal Sea and did get pulled/sent down into Torment...
I doubt the Gods let Abaddon and his Margonites wreck havoc. Abaddon attempted to attack the Rift and at the same time sent Margonites killing everything in their path. Since gods like Balthazar (Kaolai and the game of Nui anyone?) cant keep their temper they would of acted faster - especially after the Margonites defacing the Temple of the 6 Gods.
And if what you said was true.....
Year 0 - Gods take bloodstone back from the races of Tyria - Abaddon gos against the this decision and gathers his most loyal followers, the Margontes - Margonites wreck havoc on Tyria defacing the temple of the 6 gods and killing anything in their paths - Abaddon decided to drain the water from the Crystal Sea turning it into the Crystal Desert to destroy his foes, the Margonites being seafearers of this Sea are affected - The gods decide to act and a war begins with Abaddon - Abbadon looses to the power of the 5 gods and is cast into the Realm of Torment - The gods leave Tyria.
All in one year.

The scripture is Abaddons. It tells the story of Jadoth the first of his followers (whos in the Domain of Anguish at this time). It can be found in The Temple of the 6 Gods on Abaddons empty pedistal.
And from its time matching with the exact year the gods handed out magic i would presume the scripture is telling of how Abaddon handed magic to the first of what would be his most loyal followers

You do realise what is now called the Desolation is in fact part of the crystal Dessert (just as South, North and Far Shiverpeaks are all part of The Shiverpeaks) that thus was part of the crystal Sea.
The gods were little bothered of the mortal realm, that was the forgottens purpose to look after it, If the gods had been bothered by Abaddon or his followers they could have easily destroyed them all or locked them away sooner. Abaddon didnt attack the Rift he/The Margonites created it! He used his powers to form what could be described as a wormhole (starting as a Maelstrom sucking up all the water), sucking everything into it, including light, the temple of the 6 gods, the Water of the Crystal Sea and the overhead stars which came shooting down.

I would deduce:
1 BE, Abaddon gave the Margonites Magic and defended them from the Forgotten (since there were his disciples) even though the forgotten worked for all the gods. The 1st Rift was Made, once of such significance that it destroyed the crystal Sea. The Gods grant the power of Magic onto the other Races so they can protect themselves from the newly powered Margonites. Like other Rifts this one leads into the Mists which makes it a direct threat to the Gods and the newly powered Margonites could potentially defeat them and take there powers and become new gods and so the Gods decided to do something about Abaddon.
Exodus, The Gods and there Minions Battle over the remains of the Desolation the 5 Gods overpower Abaddon and Cast him into eternal emprisonment unable to kill him (since that requires a mortal Choice to absorb his powers). They create the Bloodstones to restore order to the creatures of Tryia making sure no race can ever be as powerful as the Margonites again. And Fully retreat from the world of the humans confident there new favoured Race would look after Tryia. (there former Favoured Race being the forgotten who quickly become forgotten by the gods and retreat to the dessert away from the humans a few years later) The Crystal Sea is now a Desert unable to support life (although some of the more hardy creatures later move here)
